Our immersive Upland Game Dog Retreats make the most of that special window to formulate good behaviors from a young age, setting your pup on the path to becoming not only a sweet and well-mannered member of the family, but an Upland Game dog with incredible drive suitable for competition or hunting.
The Upland Game Dog Retreat Program offers eight weeks of total training, split across two retreats. The first retreat takes place at 5-6 months old and the second takes place at 10-12 months old. This is not a “classroom” program; dogs will be introduced to working in the field, gunfire, and live birds throughout their stay.
Schedule first four-week retreat when your dog is 5-6 months old
Puppy begins upland game dog-related training at Wilde Acres and learns our training foundations as we work on developing specific upland game dog training skills
Return for a second four-week retreat when your dog is 10-12 months old
Your pup continues upland game dog-related training while at Wilde Acres and deepens the skills gained in the first retreat. The return retreat provides the option to introduce more advanced upland game dog skills
You will attend your go home lesson and another scheduled private upland game dog lesson where you will learn more about handling your dog in the field. Then you are welcome to attend weekly Handler Lessons working with you and your dog on standard obedience training and to reinforce new training habits
Upon picking up from each retreat, you’ll receive an extensive training lesson with our upland game dog team. As a follow up, you will receive one additional private training lesson. Weekly post-retreat handler classes are included with any Upland Game Dog Retreat but will focus on standard obedience behaviors vs hunting practice. Additional private lessons for hunting-specific behaviors can be scheduled at additional cost.
Every training retreat at Wilde Acres includes six follow-up sessions called Post Retreat Handler Classes. After a dog has completed a training retreat, both owner and dog are eligible to attend the weekly handler classes.
Handler classes are designed to help dog owners handle their dogs the way the Wilde Acres staff did, thus getting better behaviors. These classes will help owners feel completely confident in their dog and their skills. Wilde Acres staff recommends attending at least three handler classes.
